Insider Tips in Controlling Ticks & Fleas effectively - Part 1

This is 'Part One' of a series on Tick & Flea control programme.

Most of the animal owners face a real challenge in tackling

ticks, fleas and lice which infests their animals resulting in

reduced productivity and health. Even more importantly, they

are also concerned about the zoonotic nature of those

infestations.

In-fact, field veterinarians are mostly smart enough in

choosing the best molecule to tackle this menace, but

the issue is also related to the compliance on the animal

owners' side. And, animal owners are often unaware of

the many marketing gimmicks, tactics and arm-twisting

practices of the trade.

Field practitioners are often concerned with the indications

and contra-indications of the product. Other than this, many

pharmaceutically significant aspects influence the real field

effectiveness and product compliance.

A simple point to illustrate is that, many synthetic preparations

are photo-sensitive and as such, these products may have

undergone considerable degradation before reaching the client !

Typically, the product would have been exhibited in the trade

counters for days and kept even at window-panes of animal

shelters before it was applied. This stresses the importance

to choose a reliable and time-tested product from the market

as proven manufacturers always (or know how to) use more

' chemically stable or competent ' formulations.

This raises question to the mere concept of "chemical analysis"

to prove label claim and effectiveness. Emulsion properties,

particle size, water miscibility, penetrability, biological activity, therapeutic index, mammalian toxicity and rheologic properties are only a few of the other numerous parameters considered.

Also important is the knowledge about the combination of

formulations you choose. When you choose a particular brand

of ecto-parasiticide for spraying around the animal house and

resting places, it is equally important to use similar classes of

compounds to be applied as dusting powders. This gives an

extra edge to your tick & flea control programme. Be cautious

when preferring brands that cannot complement your strategy,

i.e., using different formulation of the same chemical, at the same

time. Of course, one formulation may be quiet effective; but use

of different molecules at the same time may induce conditions

of cross-resistance.

Compliance of a product starts right from the ease of opening

the containers ! Some of the containers are too strong, secure

or tiny that it may be quite difficult for the animal keeper / owner

to open it efficiently without any difficulty or spill offs. Ask your vet to open such 'secure' or ' tiny' containers themselves and

imagine how the laymen would have handled it. Many of the

containers are just adaptations of other product packings or

use of idle machine lines. As you would agree, the containers

should be of reasonable size and sealing for client convenience.

Also, the highly priced product need not always be the best

in the market. Pricing of similar formulations of different

companies are wildly deviating. Then, where are these huge

margins diverted ? Truly, such products are not priced on the

cost price plus margin, but certainly on the concept of how

much you can afford to pay or opportunity cost.

Ask the product executive of each company about their trade

discount structure and free offer trade policies ! Probably,

it will be difficult to know the real situation; but if you get the

chance, you will be amazed to know the real market game.

Obviously, the heavy free-trade-offer pushing is seen for the

new market entrants as well as for the poor product players.

For certain antibiotics, there are even 1:1 free offers in the

wholesale trade, just for "retail counter - pushing " !

On the other hand, stronger brands can always offer competitive

pricing by mass production and balancing their overheads on a

range of their own products. Again, remember to avoid spurious,

inferior or cheap products. Quite sadly, 'copy-cats' follow the

most unethical means of selling.

Here is where the vet's prescription preference decides; whether

the animal owner can afford such inflated / unethical pricing or

the vet's ability to strike a balance between product performance

and market dynamics. Or do you think the animal owners would

comply the prescription when he finds the product too expensive?

Things to Know About a German Shepherd Dog

by: Armen T. Ghazarians

A sound temperament is a must in a German Shepherd Dog (GSD). By sound, I mean a disposition where one minute you can let a protection trained GSD play alone with your 5-year old child, pull on its ears, pet its head, tug on its tail and NEVER-EVER be in harms way; while the next minute, it should turn into the 鍍erminator・and crush its enemies as soon as it senses an intruder.

There are three conventional methods of dog training that you can choose from in order to train you German Shepherd Dog (GSD). They are training with treats, training with treats and clickers, and training with praise. All three methods of training will work; however, there is one that stands out from the rest. That is, oral praise. Why? Because you want your dog to listen to your commands even when you don't have any toys, clickers, and/or food. Imagine you dog wanting to jump at your every command simply because it wants your praise and love and not because you are going to bribe it with treats. Once your dog gets used to getting treats for performance, it will cease to perform when you don't have any more treats left. So, treat your GSD with kindness, and train it with praise!

Training a GSD which has not been genetically selected for working ability is that much more difficult than one that has already been selected for that trait. In my opinion, the age-old debate about beauty vs. functionality of the pure-bread GSD dog was settled by the founder of the German Shepherd Dog breed, Captain Max Von Stephanitz, when he said in his book,"...Utility is the true criterion of beauty..." (The German Shepherd Dog in Word and Picture, pg. 163). Many American GSDs today have been selected for beauty rather than functionality in order to win dog shows. In many of these dog shows, obedience and showmanship are separate events and a dogs' working ability is never considered in events where the dogs are required to meet breed standards. Hence, you have the decline of the traits for which the breeds were originated for in the first place. So when you set out to buy your dream GSD, look for temperament, health, and working ability first, and beauty last.

The importance of beauty, however, should not be ignored when it comes to posing your dog for a memorable photograph. Unlike other breeds, GSD痴 are shown differently in the breed ring. The proper method for posing your GSD for the breed judges is called a 都tack・ 鉄tacking・is the method whereby one allows the forequarters of a dog to be shown parallel to one another when looking through the viewfinder of a camera and when one allows the hindquarters of the GSD to be arranged so that the limb facing the camera is placed backward while the limb facing away from the camera is placed forward. Most professional handlers who pose their GSD痴 for photographers walk them into a 都tack・instead of artificially manipulating them into it. If you plan to stack your GSD for a professional snapshot, remember to compose the image in such a way as to depict it from the tip of its nose to the tip of its hindquarters; NO MORE, NO LESS (please visit my web site to view photographs of how a GSD is stacked for the camera).

These topics cover just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to knowing the German Shepherd Dog breed. You can learn more about the GSD by visiting my web site or by getting involved in breed organizations like the German Shepherd Dog Club of America (GSDCA). With a little more reading you can become more familiar with this wonderful breed and all that it has to offer. And then perhaps you can decide whether this is the right breed for you or not.

        Smelly Dogs May Need Ablutions

by: Hope Saidel

Every week there is one date I faithfully keep: “ablutions” time with my dogs. I don’t know why we started calling it that – probably when I was completely and totally addicted to Regency Romance novels. According to Webster’s Dictionary, “ablutions” is “a washing of the body, especially as a religious ceremony.”

We don’t actually do a full-body dog wash every week – I’m told that less frequent bathing is better for a dog’s skin and fur – and it’s not really a ritual. We do trim nails, brush fur and teeth, clean ears, and wash faces. Because of the breeds we have; Brussels Griffons, Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs, skin folds, beards and mustaches, and wrinkles get special attention.

It’s down to a routine in our house; it doesn’t take much more than about 15 minutes per dog, once you catch them. One person holds the dog. The other “ablutes.”And the benefits are vast. The dogs seem happier, they smell good, and we have the chance to check each one for anything that doesn’t seem quite right.

Contrary to popular belief – clean, healthy dogs really shouldn’t smell. “Dog breath” may be an indicator that the dog’s teeth need cleaning. There are many products available to care for dog’s teeth, but a start can be made with just a damp washcloth or gauze. Special toothpastes made just for dogs are readily available. Human toothpaste isn’t a good idea – it can be too harsh and dogs tend to dislike both the foaming action and the taste of products made for people.

Your nose is an invaluable tool in assessing your dog’s health. Any odor from a dog’s ears may be a sign of infection. But we know that cleaning ears can be a challenge. We use a solution available from the veterinarian. It’s inexpensive and helps wash away any dirt or wax. Getting it into the dog’s ears is where the problem arises in our house. Even after four years of this weekly routine, our Boston Terrier struggles mightily to see what we’re doing. No matter how hard we try, we can’t seem to convince her that no one can see inside her own ears!

Keeping a dog’s nails trimmed is another part of the routine that can be challenging. Many people are wary of cutting the nails too close and hurting the dog by nicking the blood vessel. Some people avoid the problem by using a hand-held sanding device – but a light touch is essential. Power tools are exactly that – powerful. It’s better to do too little than risk hurting the dog. Most groomers and veterinarians will trim nails for a nominal fee. If you’re hesitant about trimming your dog’s nails yourself, it’s well worth the monthly visit to have a professional do the job. Even if you don’t trim nails yourself, take a look at your dog’s feet. See if their pads have any calluses or cracks or any abnormalities.

Lastly, a good brushing, in addition to taking care of any tangles, or mats in the fur, will make your dog look and feel terrific. You’ll distribute the natural oils that keep fur healthy and remove any dead fur that may have accumulated. By paying attention during brushing we discovered a growth on our Brussels Griffon we would not have discovered. A visit to the vet and a couple of stitches later, what might have been a major health issue later was disposed of with very little fuss. As with humans, early detection is the key for dogs.

Our weekly “ablutions” may not be as much fun as playing ball in the yard, but it is time well-spent with our beloved pets. Getting them used to the routine may take some patience but they’re well worth the effort.

by: Peter Garant

Several objects in the environment can be inhaled by pets and can trigger allergic reactions in dogs and cats. These objects induce the cells of the pets to release substances such as histamine. With histamine, the irritation begins.

The objects in the environment that cause this type of allergies are called allergens. Some examples of these allergens are the following:

· Pollen from the surrounding flowering plants

· Dusts that have accumulated in several areas in the house

· Mites and similar tiny creatures that survive and live on dust

· Molds, fungi, and other similar low forms of plants. The spores from these can be inhaled by pets

Pets, upon exposure to the above allergens will show several symptoms. Among dogs, the major symptoms are:

· Unstoppable itching in the face and in the feet

· Other itching and irritation in several parts of the body

· Occurrence of sores and discharges

· Loss of hair

Among cats, the symptoms of inhalant allergies are:

· Unspecific itching

· Intolerable itching in the face, neck, and thighs

· Inflammation and sores in different parts of the body

· Loss of hair

When the above symptoms are displayed, especially on certain seasons, such as spring and summer, dogs or cats are most likely affected by pollen allergy. To accurately determine the occurrence of inhalant allergies, pets should be taken to the vet. The vet will carry out a skin test to find out if, indeed, the dog or cat is suffering from inhalant allergies. Some vets also conduct blood tests, but the results of this type of test are oftentimes uncertain.

The best treatment is prevention of further worsening of the allergy. That is, the source of the allergens should be removed. Sometimes, this is easy if the allergens are dusts and mites that live in them. A good cleaning is all that a pet owner needs to do. But sometimes, removing the allergen could be difficult. That is, taking away the flowering plant may not be feasible.

Thus, owners resort to other treatments. Two of these allergy treatments are:

· Anti-itch medicines – These medicines suppress the production of histamines. These can be taken orally or gently rubbed on the irritated area.

· Allergy shots – These can make the pets less sensitive to the presence of allergens. Vets can provide these allergy shots.

Not all cats and dogs suffer allergies when exposed to pollen and other inhaled allergens. The reason for this is their heredity. Other pets have genetic characteristics that predisposes them to have allergies.

Raising A Puppy: Who Is The Boss?

by: Michael Colucci

Raising a puppy could be as difficult as raising a child. The only consolation you’d have is that you won’t need to buy diapers. However, you’d have to settle for “crap land mines” if you haven’t trained your dog very well.

Your dogs may have impregnated another dog or just come home pregnant, but you won’t have any problems with its puppies. In fact you can even sell those puppies. Whereas when your teenager has impregnated someone or comes home pregnant, you’ll have lots of moral dilemmas at hand.

Raising a puppy has got its similarities with raising a child. In fact, one could even consider that raising a puppy could be the training ground for you raising your own child in the future. Both of them would involve responsibilities, although the latter one involves more. Raising a puppy will help you learn how to be more responsible as well.

Just like a child, you’d love your dog to be a great companion and dependable as well. To make this happen, you’d have to realize that raising properly with proper training and proper owner attitude is the right way. One of the things that you could do is show the dog that you are the boss.

Showing your dog that you are the boss or alpha male will work because your dog always thinks that you are a pack member. That is how dogs view relationship with owners. In the world of a pack, there is always an alpha male.

That alpha male is always the leader that dogs will respect and follow. That alpha dog is like the mayor of our city. The alpha dog is the most powerful among the pack and makes him respected.

That is how your relationship with your dog should be like. Show the dog that you are the boss or alpha male while they are still puppies. If you are not able to show that you are the alpha male, the dog may become aggressive knowing that he or she is free from the powerful leader.

You wouldn’t want your puppy growing up to be a brat would you? Just think about it, how you would feel if your puppy is taking over your space or makes you walk him around hours or times you’d hate. They may even bite you in the worst cases.

However, to establish your Alpha male status with your dog, you wouldn’t have to lower yourself to their level. You wouldn’t have to resolve to physical aggression such as biting or fighting your dog. There are peaceful ways out there to show your dominance.

Dogs will even be happier submitting to a master. After all, that is how they were bred throughout time. They will even gain a sense of security and confidence from following a leader.

To establish you as a good pack leader without being to aggressive try to see things in the alpha male’s point of view. The person can establish him or herself as a good leader by projecting strength through the use of a steady and deep voice, giving rewards when good behavior is present and reacting nonchalant toward situations that makes a dog nervous. To reinforce that you are the leader you should try to make the dog have a lower submissive position.

These things may seem a bit harsh for some. But in reality, that’s how things work. Even when raising a child too. You would need to show that you are a person to be respected to command leadership. This training will only be for a time only, and after that time, you and your dog will have a great time together.

        Puppy Training Tips

by: Gary Allison

With more and more people buying dogs the need for good training is become a necessity. There are tons of people out there who are buying dogs because they are cute and lovable. And yes, that is a great reason to buy a puppy, but if you are going to purchase a dog, you must be ready to take care of it the right way. Below is a list of do’s and don’ts for you new puppy. These training rules can be used as a basic outline for ensuring that your puppy will be well behaved for its entire life. Remember, if you train them when they are puppies, and stick with it, your dog will be well behaved for its entire life (exceptions do apply of course!)

1. Be sure to train your puppy to be comfortable staying in a crate for an extended period of time. This is often overlooked because most people want to play with their new puppy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can work up to a longer period of time by first start with small durations. For example, keep your puppy in its crate for 15 minutes every night. Do not pay any attention to it. After the 15 minutes take the puppy out and reward it for its good behavior. Every night you can extend the duration of time, and soon enough your new puppy will be comfortable in its crate.

2. Teach your puppy early and often that it is not acceptable to jump up on guests when they enter your house, or while they are trying to eat. This is not only a bad habit for the dog, but it is also very disrespectful to your guests. The first couple of times that your new puppy does this be sure to correct it in a positive manner. The most important thing to remember is to not let the puppy ever get away with this. If it happens once, it can happen again. And after a habit is established it will be much tougher to break.

3. Absolutely no chasing or running after other animals, or other people. A lot of puppies get into the habit of chasing after anything that will run from it. This goes for animals that it may see in the yard, or the mailman who visits your house everyday. After breaking this habit you will be glad that you did; just ask your mailman!

4. Train your dog to quit barking when told. This can be one of the tougher habits to break, especially if you get a dog who loves to bark. The most important thing to remember is to stay persistent with this one. If your dog is barking when it should not be, correct it every time. Do not give up on your persistence, and you will have success in the end.

5. A new puppy should never be allowed to be protective of its toys, food, or bed. Try to break your new puppy of this habit as soon as possible. You will be able to tell if this is a problem by a simple test. When your dog gets done playing with a toy attempt to pick it up and take it away. If the puppy snaps at you are growls, then you have this problem. Be sure to remedy it as soon as possible. If you let it go too long this can turn into a serious problem at a later date.

6. Make sure that your new puppy can be left alone without supervision. Also make sure that when left alone, your puppy is not destructive. Again, like the crate exercise discussed above, leave your puppy at home alone for a few minutes at a time. Eventually you will be built up to the point where you can leave your new puppy at home for hours on end without ever having to worry about coming home to a huge mess!

7. Make sure that your puppy is comfortable in places other than its home. Making your puppy feel comfortable outside of its comfort zone will surely make your life easier as the years pass. This is very important because your new puppy will eventually have to spend time at the veterinarian, a kennel, groomer, or at another person’s house. If you miss out on training your dog for this, you will be held down by it for the rest of your life. If you can never leave your dogs side, you will surely feel the effects anytime it needs a haircut, a vaccine, or if you ever decide to take a vacation. Do not miss out on this training step!

Overall, these seven training rules will surely make your relationship with your new puppy a positive experience.

Feeding And Keeping Your Dog Healthy

by: Peter Garant

A healthy puppy should be clear-eyed, somewhat roly-poly, loose-skinned, free from any skin trouble, hungry for its meals, and lively. It should not be timid or shy.

If the puppy seems warm or sleepy most of the time, ask one of your parents to take its temperature. A dog痴 temperature normally is between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius. If its temperature rises above 39 degrees, call your veterinarian.

When you buy your puppy, ask what shots it has received and when it got them. If it has not received shots to prevent distemper, infectious hepatitis, leptospirosis, and rabies. take it immediately to a veterinarian to have them. Then get yearly boosters. You should also find out whether your puppy has been wormed. Most puppies have worms at some time.

For the first few days, you should feed your puppy the same diet as the owners did. If you wish to change the diet, do so gradually. Each day, feed a little of the new food mixed with the old.

Puppies 6 to 10 weeks old maybe fed 4 times a day. From 10 weeks to 6 months, 3 times a day should be enough. After 6 months, twice daily will serve. And after 1 year, once a day用lus a biscuit for breakfast擁s ample.

Meat should be the main part of your dog痴 diet. Fresh, canned, or frozen beef or horsemeat are good choices. It is not necessary to cook the meat, but it should be served at room temperature. With the meat, mix a dog meal or kibbled biscuit soaked in hot water, soup, or milk. You can get the meal or biscuit in the supermarket, feed store, or pet shop. Puppies need vitamins and minerals, and your veterinarian can give you vitamin tablets that your dog will enjoy chewing.

Other foods you may safely give your dog are well-cooked chicken, lamb, beef hearts, liver, and leafy vegetables. Hard biscuits of the right size for the dog痴 mouth and dog candy will be appreciated too. A little cooked rice or dry toast may help the dog in illness or when it is recovering.

A puppy loses its baby teeth when it is between 4 and 5 months. It will be grateful for beef hide or rawhide strips to chew. You can buy them at supermarkets and pet shops. These strips are also very helpful in keeping the puppy from chewing your shoes and the furniture. Pet shops and markets also carry special hard marrow bones that help in teething and in keeping the new teeth clean and healthy.

Leave a bowl of water so that your dog can have a drink at any time傭ut remove the supply of water at 5 or 6 PM when you\'re housebreaking a puppy. This will help the puppy go through the night without mistake.

Caring For Your Dog

by: Michael Colucci

Dogs are social animals that have worked with humans for thousands of years. They have played an important role in various different cultures. Dogs are highly valued for their intelligence and loyalty, and it is important to train and care for them properly.

Despite the importance of dogs, owners may find that there are many challenges in training and caring for them. While many people want to own a dog, few know how to train them properly. A dog which is not disciplined will not bring happiness to its owners. Too many people allow their dogs to develop bad habits

You want to make sure you purchase quality food for your dog, even if its a bit expensive. Cheap dog food won\'t give your dog the healthy look it should have. You want your dog to have a shiny coat and bright eyes. Dogs are much like their owners, and will behave in many of the same ways.

Dogs are like small children, and should be treated as such. Dogs should not be left alone for long periods of time, as they are prone to getting into trouble. When dogs are left alone at home, they need to have a designated area with boundaries. Leave chew toys and other things that will keep them occupied.

When your dog behaves properly, you should always praise and reward him. This teaches him that good behavior leads to rewards, while bad behavior does not. When you do this, you will find that your dog behaves properly on a regular basis. When your dog doesn\'t behave properly, you should also discipline him, so that he understands the difference between right and wrong behavior.

There is a difference between discipline and abuse. There are some dog owners that don\'t understand this, and hit or kick their dogs in order to train them. This is abuse, and is not an effective way to train your dog, and may even cause your dog to attack you. You want your dog to respect you, not fear you.

A good way to discipline your dog without hitting him is to spray water on him and give him a verbal warning. This will get the message across in a non-abusive way. How you train your dog is very important. You want a dog which you can take out for a walk without worrying about him bothering others. You want a dog that will listen to your commands.

Dogs Are Gods of Frolic

by: Paul MacIver

Dogs are amongst the most amazing creatures because they give unconditional love. Dogs love their masters and the masters reciprocate by providing them with all the things of comfort they can afford. Dog supplies are important and useful things for keeping your dog healthy and happy, and include items for dog grooming and maintaining good dog health. Canine or dog supplies can be classified into several sub categories, including dog training supplies, dog grooming supplies, and even more specialist items like hunting dog supplies.

Dog Grooming:

Dogs are gods of frolic. Undertaking thorough dog grooming is like having a permanent job requiring lots of patience, yet packed with exercise and the general fun of bringing up a dog and ensuring it lives a long and carefree life. Dog grooming is an important practice which should not be underestimated – a practice which ensures good dog health and hygiene and should also help to eliminate most dog health problems.

Dog grooming is in fact a somewhat intense program of dog health care that covers the entire life span a dog. Puppy care, canine health care, giving a hygiene bath, washing, combing, brushing, checking ears, paws, teeth and underside, nail trimming, removing dog fleas and insects, and fixing regular meetings with a professional veterinary are all important activities that a dog owner should undertake. A dog’s masters should follow a schedule of regular grooming sessions.

Puppy care is a very important practice that requires a lot of diligence and patience. Like children, puppies require some extra special attention. A puppy needs to be handled with extreme care, and should be groomed properly, fed carefully and well, and bedded properly.

Dog Grooming Supply:

Good dog grooming supplies are required to help undertake the important activities of dog grooming and care. A dog supply may include a dog house, dog furniture, dog carriers, dog beds (and designer dog beds), dog toys, dog collars and leashes, dog bath tub, dog soaps, dog perfumes, dog odor removers and mouth fresheners, dog clothes, designer dog clothes, dog t-shirts, dog jewelry, dog food, dog tonics & supplements and dog medication.

Dog Beds:

A dog bed is a bed designed especially for the sleeping comfort of a dog. It should be the snug retreat to where it retires to take sweet dreams at the end of a long and active day. Good dog beds play a very important part in keeping your dog in good health. An improper sleep may very much affect the health of a dog, thus dog masters should be very careful when buying dog pet beds. Dog beds and dog bedding include a dog bed mattress, dog bed sheets, dog bed cover, dog bed cushions, dog pillows, dog blankets and dog quilts or duvets.

Dog beds are available in numerous designs and sizes including luxury dog pet beds, large dog beds, wicker dog bed, leather dog beds, top quality dog beds, orthopedic dog beds etc. There are a number of designer dog pet beds available. Dog beds can also be purchased online, as there are many dog pet bed manufacturers now selling their dog beds through their websites.

“Perhaps the dog is the only animal that has seen its god, as a man is a dog\'s idea of what God should be.”

To Dog or Not to Dog: That is the Question

by: Cari Haus

Should I get a dog, or should I not? This is a question that so many people are asking themselves. Do I really want to get a dog? The pleasures of dog ownership are numerous, but along with the pleasures, there are also responsibilities.

Gone are the days when a dog just "hangs around", and you occasionally throw him a bone. Gone are the days of just feeding the dog each day and forgetting about it. Many people are now opting to share their homes with their dogs, inviting them to be part of their family. Some people are opting for dog ownership in lieu of a family or in lieu of having children.

Obviously the role of dog ownership has certainly changed......and what about the role of the dog? This role has also changed. There are mixed breeds and purebreds just like there always has been, and now there are "designer" dogs. This is an intentional breeding of two different kinds of purebred dogs hoping to pull the better traits from each breed. The cost of a "designer" dog often exceeds the cost of a purebred dog, and their popularity is on the rise.

As people become more health conscious, they are interested in healthy options for their dogs as well. There are nearly as many health choices for dogs as there are for people. Although there are still good ole\' milk bone biscuits available, many owners only serve their canine companions gourmet treats that are made from all natural ingredients. There are the standard beef, chicken, and lamb flavors as well as the more gourmet flavors. How about sweet potato biscotti or pumpkin muffins? There\'s even doggie ice cream now.

An abundance of clothing and accessories is also available. From trendy "Yorkie" carriers, a small carrier to enable your companion to travel with you, to orthopedic beds for easing joint discomfort for your dogs, to doggie boots for keeping paws dry, and hats and coats and p.j.\'s, and the list goes on and on.

Doggie spas are here to supply canine massages and pedicures complete with nail polish. For the working moms and dads, there are doggie day cares or dog walkers who actually come to your house to walk your dog. Yes, the role of "the dog" has certainly changed, as well as the role of the owner.

Most dogs are now very pampered family members, and yes, there is responsibility in dog ownership. To dog or not to dog is something that only you can answer, however; all I can say is that the rewards from such a venture are enormous.

Dog Beds: Now That You Have Your New Pooch, Where\'s He Going to Sleep?

by: Allen Shaw

Take my word for it, no matter how much you want your new puppy to sleep with you, this is not the best option. Especially when you’re dealing with a 75-pound behemoth that’s scared of a little thunder. Your king-sized bed suddenly becomes half a twin-size bed. So next to food and a trip to the vet, a good dog bed should be one of your first major purchases. But what kind of dog bed should you get? There are literally hundreds of choices. For instance:

Large dog beds for the type of dog mentioned in the first paragraph

Outdoor beds for the pooch who prefers sleeping under the stars

Fancy designer beds for the pampered pooch that’s probably related to Paris Hilton’s Tinkerbelle

Travel and car beds for the dogs who spend a lot of time on the road

Heated beds for the cold-natured little breeds

Orthopedic beds for the pooches getting up there in age Iron beds for the decorating pooches in your household

Chew-proof beds for…well…you know

And waterproof beds for the little pups who sometimes get a little scared at night…you know what I mean.

But no matter the bed you buy, there are a couple of rules you should be aware of. First, make sure every part of the bed is machine washable. No matter how many times you wash your dog, he’s going to manage to smell up that bed. And if it’s a bed you keep in your own bedroom, the odors that will eventually emanate from that bed will give you nightmares.

Second, get a bed with cedar shavings or a thick foam pad as the padding. This will help immensely with keeping your favorite flea friends from becoming permanent residents of your dog’s bed. Third, make sure you buy the right size dog bed. If possible, take your dog with you when you buy the bed. No matter how cute the bed is, or how well it goes with your home décor, if your dog can’t comfortably lay down in the bed, he won’t use it.

Also, pay close attention to what the bed is made of. Wicker is cute and very stylish. But fleas love it. And for the dog that hasn’t quite gotten over the chewing stage yet, a wicker bed is little more than the world’s largest chew toy. Beanbags are also popular dog beds because most people born in the late 60s still have one stowed away in their basements or attics somewhere (yes you do, admit it). But have you ever seen what’s inside a beanbag? You will find out very quickly if Fido discovers how to operate the zipper that keeps the stuffing in the bag. You would be wise to leave the beanbag in the attic and open your wallet cheapskate.

So now that you’ve done the research, go out and buy your new best friend a great bed. Remember to get the proper size. Get one with cedar shaving or foam as the padding. Make sure all parts of the bed are machine washable. And most importantly, make sure Fido likes the bed or you will have an unwanted visitor in the middle of the night…especially when there’s thunder.

Top Ten Tips For Successful Mating of Your Dog

by: K.Senthilkumar

Breeding is a noble calling and unless you can improve the breed you should not go for breeding your dog. Despite all of the obvious virtues of breeding articles, no book or article emphasize any person to prepare for breeding. A good intentional pet owner wasn’t aware of any genetic complications, unable to identify the signals of struggling bitch or didn’t recognize a breech birth! Possibly the dam could be lost as well!

Follow these top ten tips to get successful puppies out of your dam and also it can be delightful to see how magnificently most females cope with whelping and with caring for their puppies.

1. Ask your vet to examine the bitch before mating and obtain certificate that it is healthy and not carrying any inherited diseases

2. Plan well to house the ensuing litter of puppies.

3. Check for the purity of the dog by kennel club certificate. (Cross bred won\'t fetch good standards)

4. Contact a reputable breeder and make use of his dog as a stud for your bitch to get good quality puppies.

5. Ask for health certificate for the stud dog and also examine whether it has been subjected for brucellosis and other sexually transmitted disease, if that area is prone for brucellosis.

6. Be careful with your bitch-exercise your bitch only on lead when she is in season.

7. It is always preferable to perform mating in the stud dogs place rather than vice-versa.

8. Mating should be done on 9th day, 11th day and 13th day for fruitful results.

9. If possible try to calm the bitch during mating and ensure a "tie" long lasts for at least 10 minutes.

10. Make a visit to vet\'s clinic after three weeks of mating to confirm the pregnancy.
